Heraklion is the largest city in Crete and the fourth-largest in Greece. It has a population of 200,000, including the neighbouring municipality of Alikarnassos (near the airport).
In Heraklion is the Archaeological Museum of Heraklion, housing the treasures of Minoan Crete, while a few kilometres south of the city is the marvellous Minoan Palace of Knossos.
